Comms
Comms is your company's team chat: channels for the whole company or for a few people, plus direct messages with each teammate. In the left menu, under Plan, choose Comms. Every company has # general, which everyone at the company can read and post in. Messages are saved, new ones appear while you have Comms open, and the number on Comms in the left menu is how many messages you have not read yet. Comms is for Company Users; crew are reached through show alerts, the day sheet and GigOps Crew.
How do I post in a channel?
- In the left menu, choose Comms.
- Choose the channel under Channels (for example # general).
- Type in the box at the bottom ("Message #general").
- Press Enter or choose Send.
Everyone who can read that channel sees it, with your name and the time.
How do I start a new channel?
- In Comms, choose + next to Channels.
- Enter a Name. Names are lower case, with numbers and dashes: "Load In" becomes # load-in.
- Add a Topic if you like, and pick a Tour if the channel is about one tour.
- Under Who is in it, choose Everyone at the company, or Only the people I pick and tick the people.
- Choose Create channel.
You are always a member of a channel you open. A channel for picked people shows a lock next to its name, and nobody else at the company sees it in their list.
How do I mention someone?
Type @ and the start of their name, then choose them from the list that appears. The mention reads like @jane.doe (first name, a dot, last name). If nobody else at the company shares their first name, @jane works too. The person gets a notification in their bell (and a push notification if they turned those on) that opens the channel. A mention only reaches someone who can read the channel: mentioning a person who is not in a locked channel does nothing.
How do unread counts work?
Each channel shows the number of messages you have not read yet, and Comms in the left menu shows the total. Opening a channel marks it read, which also clears any mention of you in it from the bell. Your own messages never count as unread. When you join a company, its older messages do not count as unread.
How do I change a channel's topic or members?
- Open the channel in Comms.
- Choose Channel settings at the top right.
- Change the Topic, the Tour or the ticked members, then choose Save.
The person who opened the channel and Company Admins can do this. Only a Company Admin can rename a channel or switch it between everyone and picked people.
How do I archive or restore a channel?
A Company Admin opens the channel, chooses Channel settings, then Archive channel. An archived channel moves to Archived at the bottom of the channel list: everyone who could read it still can, but nobody can post in it. To bring it back, open it from Archived, choose Channel settings, then Restore channel. # general cannot be archived or renamed, and it is always open to everyone.
Can a Company Admin see locked channels?
Yes. Company Admins see every channel in their list, including locked channels they are not in, so they can rename, archive or fix the members of any channel. A locked channel they are not in does not add to their unread count.
How do I send a direct message to one teammate?
- In Comms, find the person under Direct messages in the left panel.
- Choose their name.
- Type your message and press Enter or choose Send.
A direct message goes to that person's Inbox too, so they see it even if they do not open Comms. Only active Company Users at your company are listed; invite someone in Users & access first if they are missing.
Why can't I post in Comms?
View only seats can read Comms but not post: View only is a read-only seat, so the message box is replaced by a note. A View only person can still be a member of a locked channel, read it and be mentioned in it. Ask a Company Admin to change your access level in Users & access if you need to write. An archived channel takes no new messages either; a Company Admin can restore it. If your message disappears from the box and an error shows, it was not sent; your text is put back so you can try again.
What is the difference between Comms and Inbox?
Comms is the shared channels plus quick direct messages. Inbox is your direct messages laid out like email, with a subject, Reply and Mark all read. A direct message sent from either one shows in the other person's Inbox.
Can crew use Comms?
Not yet. GigOps Crew has no messages area, so channels are for Company Users only. Reach crew with Send alert on a show, the day sheet, or the crew tools in Crew.
